If you’re ever wandering around Dorset and have a spare afternoon, I’ve found an absolute gem that you simply have to visit. Forget your typical museum experience with “do not touch” signs and exhibits behind glass. Just a stone’s throw from Bournemouth Airport is a place where you can genuinely get up close and personal with the titans of the sky: the Bournemouth Aviation Museum.

As a travel blogger, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences, and this place is truly special. It’s not just a collection of old planes; it’s an interactive journey through aviation history, run by a brilliant team of passionate volunteers.
More Than a Museum – It’s a Playground for All Ages
The moment you step in, you can tell this isn’t your average museum. The main draw, and the reason kids (and let’s be honest, adults too!) have massive grins on their faces, is the museum’s “hands-on” policy. Yes, you read that right. On most of the aircraft, you’re actively encouraged to climb the steps, settle into the pilot’s seat, and let your imagination take flight.
I spent a good while sitting in the cockpit of a mighty Westland Wessex helicopter, fiddling with the controls and picturing a dramatic coastal rescue. Then, I squeezed into the snug cockpit of a SEPECAT Jaguar fighter jet. There’s something incredibly thrilling about sitting where a pilot once sat, surrounded by a dizzying array of dials, switches, and levers. It’s a fantastic way to appreciate the skill and bravery of the people who flew these magnificent machines.

A Walk Among Giants
The collection itself is wonderfully diverse. You’ll find a fantastic mix of military and civilian aircraft. Some of the stars of the show include:
- The English Electric Lightning: A true Cold War icon, famous for its incredible speed and climbing ability.
- The Hawker Hunter: A classic British fighter jet that looks just as sleek today as it did decades ago.
- A Boeing 737: You can actually walk through the fuselage of “The Spirit of Peter Bath,” a former Palmair jet. Inside, there’s a lovely exhibition about the local airline and its founder. It’s a real treat for anyone interested in the history of commercial flight.
- Avro Vulcan Cockpit: While they don’t have the whole aircraft, you can get inside the nose section of this legendary V-bomber.
But it’s not all about the big jets. There are also smaller aircraft, aero engines on display, and even a Double Decker bus and an old airport fire engine that you can explore.

The Perfect Spot for Plane Spotters
One of the best perks of the museum’s location is that it’s right next to an active airport. They’ve cleverly set up a viewing platform that gives you a superb view over the taxiway and runway of Bournemouth Airport. There’s a real buzz in the air as you watch modern passenger planes and private jets take off and land just across the road. It perfectly connects the history you’re standing amongst with the aviation of today.
