Have you ever dreamt of a place where history whispers from every stone, and the roar of a lion waits just around the corner? I found just such a place deep in the heart of the English county of Wiltshire. It’s called Longleat, and it’s so much more than just a country estate. It’s a gateway to another world, where the splendour of the Renaissance meets the wildness of the African savannah. Right then, let’s get going!
A Fairytale Palace, But With a Bite
The first time you lay eyes on Longleat House, it’s hard not to be utterly gobsmacked. This Renaissance gem, built in the 16th century by Sir John Thynne, looks like it’s been lifted straight from the pages of a history book. The impressive façade, the soaring turrets, and the symmetrically placed fountains, whose gentle splashing is wonderfully calming – it all creates an atmosphere of sheer majesty and power.
What’s fascinating is that Longleat made its mark on history not just as an architectural marvel, but also as a trailblazer for tourism. It was the very first stately home in Britain to open its doors to the public. The interiors are just as stunning – lavishly decorated halls, galleries filled with portraits, and rooms that still seem to hold the memories of their former inhabitants. Wandering through them, I felt like I’d stepped back in time.

A Safari You Won’t Forget
But what truly sets Longleat apart begins where the manicured lawns end. I’m talking, of course, about the first drive-through safari park outside of Africa! Taking your own car through the vast grounds of the estate is a proper adrenaline rush.
An Audience with Kings: First stop – the lion enclosure. The sight of a whole pride lazing on the grass, just a few feet from the car bonnet, is absolutely mesmerising. These powerful predators seem completely unfazed by our presence, which only heightens the feeling of being in the presence of true, untamed nature.

Tiger Trail and Monkey Mayhem: Further on, majestic tigers await, gracefully prowling through their territory. But the real fun (and the risk of losing your windscreen wipers!) begins in the monkey enclosure. The residents here, a troupe of inquisitive macaques, love to explore every car, leaping onto roofs and mirrors. It’s chaotic, noisy, and brilliantly fun!

A Taste of Africa and Australia: The safari is also a chance to get up close with giraffes, who elegantly peer into car windows, hoping for a tasty treat. You can spot rhinos, camels, and even feed the deer, who approach open windows without a hint of fear. It’s incredible how close the world of wild animals feels here.

More Than Just a Drive-Through
Think that’s all? Think again! Longleat has so much more to offer:
- Jungle Cruise: A boat trip adventure where you can see Gorilla Colony, listen to the loud barks of sea lions (and feed them a fish!), and keep an eye out for the hippos.
- Miniature Railway: A charming little train ride alongside the lake is the perfect way to relax for a bit and enjoy the views from a different angle.
- Walking Trails: Not all the animals are viewed from behind a car window. Adorable meerkats, playful otters, and, in the special “Koala Creek” area, the only koalas in England are all waiting to say hello!
- Hedge Maze: One of the biggest in the world! Getting lost in its winding paths is great fun, and finding your way to the central viewing tower is incredibly satisfying.

The Verdict
Longleat is the complete package. It offers the perfect blend of history, architecture, beautiful gardens, and, most importantly, unforgettable encounters with wildlife. This isn’t your average zoo or a typical historic house. It’s an experience that engages all the senses and stays with you long after you’ve left. If you’re ever in England, you absolutely must put Longleat on your to-do list – I promise, you won’t regret it!
