If you’re dreaming of golden sands, sparkling blue waters, and that classic British seaside charm, then look no further than Bournemouth. Tucked away on the stunning Dorset coast, this town boasts a seven-mile stretch of award-winning beaches that are, quite simply, a slice of heaven. Whether you’re a family looking for a fun day out, a couple seeking a romantic stroll, or an adventurer eager for some watersports, Bournemouth has a patch of sand just for you.

So, grab your bucket and spade, and let’s take a wander along this magnificent coastline!
The Main Attraction: Bournemouth Beach & Pier
Right in the heart of the action is the famous Bournemouth Beach. It’s the town’s central hub and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. The sand is incredibly fine and soft – perfect for building sandcastles or just kicking off your flip-flops and feeling it between your toes. The water here is known for being clean and safe, regularly earning it the prestigious Blue Flag award.

You can’t talk about Bournemouth Beach without mentioning its iconic Bournemouth Pier. It’s more than just a place to enjoy the sea views. It’s an all-weather entertainment hub! You can test your skills in the arcade, try your hand at the RockReef activity centre with its climbing walls and zip line, or simply grab a traditional ice cream and watch the world go by.
Top Tip: For a truly magical experience, take a stroll along the beach at dusk. The sunsets here are absolutely spectacular, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink.

West of the Pier: Durley Chine & Alum Chine
If you fancy somewhere a little quieter but still close to the town centre, head west.
Durley Chine is a firm favourite with families. It’s another Blue Flag winner, boasting soft sands and excellent facilities, including lovely beach cafés and brightly coloured, rentable beach huts that line the promenade. It’s just far enough from the main pier to feel a bit more relaxed, even on a sunny summer’s day.

A little further along, you’ll find Alum Chine. This beach has a wonderfully playful vibe, largely thanks to its fantastic tropical-themed playground and water play area. It’s the perfect spot to let the little ones burn off some energy. The beach itself is stunning, and from here you get some of the best views across the bay towards Old Harry Rocks on a clear day. It’s also known for being one of the most accessible beaches, with a land train connecting it to Bournemouth Pier.

East of the Pier: Boscombe & Southbourne
Heading east from Bournemouth Pier offers a slightly different, more laid-back atmosphere.
Boscombe Beach has a cool, almost surf-y vibe. It’s a bit trendier and a hub for watersports. Here you can try your hand at paddleboarding, kayaking, or even surfing when the conditions are right. Boscombe Pier is more minimalist than its Bournemouth cousin but has its own unique charm, with musical instruments dotted along its length for you to play. The area also has some great seaside restaurants and the beautiful Boscombe Chine Gardens are just a short walk away.

Keep heading east and you’ll arrive at Southbourne Beach. This is the local’s choice for a peaceful day by the sea. It’s a wide, sandy and shingle beach backed by dramatic cliffs. It’s generally much quieter than the central beaches, making it ideal for those looking to escape the crowds. The nearby Fisherman’s Walk Cliff Lift is a charming, historic way to get from the clifftop down to the promenade.

Good to Know:
- Getting Around: A brilliant way to see the whole stretch of coastline is by hopping on the land train that runs along the promenade from Alum Chine to Bournemouth Pier and beyond.
- Dog-Friendly Beaches: During the peak season (1 May to 30 September), dogs are restricted on the main beaches, but there are designated dog-friendly areas to enjoy with your four-legged friends.
- Safety: The beaches are patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the summer season, so you can relax and swim safely between the red and yellow flags.
Bournemouth’s coastline truly offers something for everyone. It’s a place that manages to be both vibrant and relaxing, traditional and modern, all at the same time. It’s the quintessential British seaside experience, and it’s waiting for you to explore it.
